Question about Dragon Age 2?
Are the side quests you find at the beginning of the game available throughout the entire time? Or do they go away after your progress through the main story?

They do not stay the entire game
POSSIBLE SPOILER
The game is divided into 3 major acts. Following the quests in the "Main Plot" section of the quest log will progress you through those acts. Once you follow them enough, the act will end and you will not be able to go back and do any of the side quests from the previous act.
So if you want to do them, do them before the "Main Plot" quests.

It depends on the quest. Most need to be finished before you move on to the next act of the game. The time gaps are between 1-3 years, so it makes sense that you couldn't go back and save a kidnapped child or hunt down a group of bandits once you have moved on.
