How long is normal for a kitten to suckle from it's mother?

Sadly, my cat's kittens were stillborn. When I took her to the vet to be checked out, a six month old stray kitten had just been brought in and we adopted her. The new kitten is now suckling from the 'mother' cat who lost her kittens which seems unusual for a six month old kitten. How long is normal for a kitten to suckle from a cat? Will the 'mother' cat get sick of it after a while?

Usually kittens suckle until they are about 5 weeks old. Some kittes who stay with their mother and aren't weaned continue. The mothering cat's body will continue producing milk until the kittens stop suckling and then it will dry up. It is not unusual for a cat that has lost it's kittens whose milk hasn't dried up to adopt a foster kitten or even adotp another kind of animal!
