How will DLC work on skyrim?

It's likely to work the same as fallout etc did, but how did they work? Will you need to complete the main quest to access the content or will the content be something seperate?

chances are new places, missions, or people that fight for you. but who knows

We won't really know until the DLC is either announced or it comes out.
