Deus Ex question. Do you have to send the NSF distress signal and switch sides or can you remain with UNATCO?

Thanks - I really needed confirmation.

I'm role playing a 'total jackass' (according to Paul) JC and it seemed out of character for him to just switch sides to a faction he's been slaughtering for quite a while.
