Do you think I have dyslexia?

Getting your "J"s and "G"s mixed up.

Getting "C''s and ''Z''s mixed up.

Getting ''1''s and ''7''s

Saying words a little backwards.

I've been doing this for a long time, I'm 16, and I never really considered it until my friend's brother told me it could be dyslexia.

Is he right? Is it serious?

Dyslexia is a hereditary disorder, and usually shows up in the early years of primary school, do you know if there is any family history of dyslexia, parents, uncles, aunts, cousins etc?.

Dyslexia can affect all aspects of learning, causing difficulty with reading, writing, spelling, maths, memory, sequencing skills, reversal of letters, p, q, b, d, m, w, and some numbers, transposing of words such as was to saw, omitting words and difficulty pronouncing words, especially unfamiliar words, and confusion between left & right and difficulty reading maps.

Or it can just affect someones ability to write & spell (dysgraphia) or difficulty with grasping maths concepts etc (dyscalculia).

You will need to have a formal assessment, by a qualified specialist in dyslexia, and as dyslexia is not a visual problem most optometrists cannot test for dyslexia, and neither can doctors because its not a medical disorder.

Dyslexia is not something that can be treated with any medication, omega 3 fish oil or anything else. There is a few programs that may help dyslexics learn to manage their dyslexia, such as Orton Gillington or the Davis correction method (which my daughter did, and helped her immensely)

The key to managing dyslexia is is knowing exactly how the dyslexia affects you, and what your learning style is, are you a visual, auditory or Kinesthetic (hands on) learner, by knowing these you can find & develop strategies to help you, which means the school can than implement these to help you.

If you suspect you are dyslexic please speak to your parents and or school counselor, and ask if you can have an assessment, but make sure who ever does the assessment is qualified in dyslexia.

My daughter & I are both dyslexic, and we had my daughter on Omega 3 fish oil, which did help her with concentration, but did not cure or treat the dyslexia or ADHD & ODD. I was taking the maximum levels Omega 3 for quite awhile for another medical condition, but developed an severe allergy to anything with fish, so had to stop taking it, but the only difference I noticed was my memory was better, and I could concentrate a bit better.

There is a bunch of loser ******* making fun about this subject out there. I personally do care, and out of the blue I am feeling a drive to help. I was so-called diagnosed with dyslexia in like 1980. The system prescribed coke bottle glasses that I was forced to wear for weeks in 3rd grade and my vision was and still is 20/20 better than anyone I know. I was viewing letters upside down and backwards and didnt have the best attention. Labeled Hyper-active at the time. Cutting out food coloring was the fad at the time. I would have more than likely been prescribed ritalin in this day and age. Parents DO NOT DO THAT. The best advice for parents of a dyslexic child from someone who HAD DYSLEXIA and sees letters fine and reads like a champ and is highly successful feed your children as much omega 3 fish oil they will tolerate. Feed them tuna in oil breakfast, lunch, and dinner, cut every possible form of saturated fat food stuff you can find. Let them only drink distilled drinking water and call me in a week. If your question is serious and you truly are looking for an answer, this will clear up any questions. :)
