I think it defeats the purpose to make it private.
What I do is allow emails without giving away my email address, but no Instant Messaging, and then just Block anybody you don't care for.
If somebody creeps me out or is a racist or is obviously a troll...I block their oz.

If you are using other accounts to cheat then it would be best to keep your yahoo answers network private.
It is also best to keep your q&a's private too so no one can get mad at you and start reporting all your answers just to get back at you.

It's best to keep it private because of report-happy trolls and stalkers. All they do is falsely report other users' postings and get unnecessary violations or suspensions as a result.
