Did you catch the Gingrich notion that we'd have a base on Moon...?
by 2020 if he got two terms?...... and that if there got to be 13,000 people living up there , they could apply to be a state?......really?.... sigh......

Ouch. They eye roll strain at that patently pandering to an audience actually hurt a little.

Yes, it can And WILL be done, by treaty. The U.S.A. has been a signatory to seven United Nations space treaties since 1967. Note the year. The U.N. treaties space treaties were modeled on the U.N. Antarctica treaties.
Don't take Newt seriously. He was playing to the Florida audiences. He's been a politician a VERY long time. He understands how to play and stroke a crowd to HIS full advantage.
Newt is a narcissist. What he was doing when he said Obama is a the most dangerous President that the United States has ever had was projecting HIMSLEF onto Obama. IF Newt were elected President (he will NOT be elected, even if he becomes the GOP nominee), HE would be the most dangerous President ever, IMO He has a hair trigger temper. If your memory goes back that far, you might recall that "W" ALSO said that the USA would be back on the Moon by 2020 too. Then 9/11 happened. "w' had a full scale censoring effort going on against NASA's chief climatologist at Goddard Space Center, Dr. James Hansen. Recall that "W" supposedly has Big Oil experience. Denying anthropogenic global warming is something ALL the Big oil companies did FOR DECADES. The evidence has become very obvious that mankind IS accelerating a natural global warming. Some Big Oil companies have come to their senses in the last 12 years. Every time an Oklahoma Senator comes up for re-election, I vote against him. I was student for many years at the School of Geology & Geophysics at the University of Oklahoma. I saw MANY handshake deals made in the halls between alumnae of the school who had become very wealthy as CEOs who founded their own oil Big Oil company, Valerno is an example, NOT to understand that Big Oil company lobbyists really DO "own" Oklahoma's current and past Senators
AND Representatives.

Well, ..., first that would be cool and if we began colonizing the moon I'm sure there would be an allegiance to the US but I do believe that they would eventually become a separate entity all their own. I'm sure at some point the treaty would have to be reviewed and later revised.
Now as far as Gingrich's words, I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him. He's just taking advantage of financially depressed Floridians. It's cruel really to raise the hopes of Floridians just to sell them short again and again. I grew up in Florida and every politician (since the Apollo Era) has gone down there and promised to bring the Space program back to it's glory days. Yet none of them .. not one ... ever did. When it comes to the space program they're all a pack of liars. Especially, the big fat white haired one.

Gingrich is ALSO well-known for his ability to make grandiose plans that cannot be fulfilled.
"Owning" the moon or any part of it is illegal according to international treaty. Any colony on the moon would have to declare itself a separate COUNTRY. Imagine the fight THAT would cause! Imagine 1776 in space!

The USA is in $15,200,000,000,000 of debt, and they honestly think they could build a Moon base in 8 years?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, ouch this hurts from laughing so hard.

It would be FAR better for the country and the world to spend that kind of money on scientific research on Earth.

Don't forget that W. said we would go to Mars. He just forgot to give NASA any money to do it.
Newt likes to think big ideas.
