When listening to the police scanner, how do I know it's a big story?

I'm a journalism student in college, who is getting off-campus media experience through a community television station. I'm getting some reporting time in at the station.

I've seen police monitors sold at places like Radio Shack.

However, how do I know if it's a big story? When do I know to race like Jeff Gordon to the scene of the fire? What's the sound I hear if there is a robbery in progress?

Ask yourself how interesting YOU think it is.

If you're interested, then others may be as well.

But... If you don't drive safely, you might BE the story.

if it mentions minorities or anything liberal itll make the news. it always does. sadly. look ill be honest dont go for that crap. look for something meaningful. hell its campaign season go to a democratic convention then go to a republican convention. then compare them. do something informative and inteligent. dont lower yourself to the mass media "if it bleeds it leads" hell find some service members and ask them what they think (they dont eat babies all the time)
