Are there rat vets and rat breeders in West Virginia?
due to certain conditions my family might have to move to West Virginia. It's not set in stone yet, but I was googling rat breeders and vets in West Virginia and couldn't find anything around St. Albans WV. This really sucks... I live in Chicago - the vet's an hour away... which is much more reasonable than a four hour drive one way.
thanks for the answers... helped me calm down a bit..

It can be hard to find pet rat breeders no matter where you live, let alone reputable ones, so it wouldn't be surprising if there aren't any in the area you're thinking of moving to. There are none anywhere near where I live, and I live in a pretty big city, not a small town or anything. I know of a lot of other people who have the same problem. Luckily, getting new rats isn't something you have to do all the time. When it comes that you want to get new ones, you can either make the drive to a rat breeder somewhere else (maybe you'll visit family where you live now and can get them from your current breeder) or you can look for accidental litters on craigslist. It also looks like there is a rescue (on petfinder) that takes in rats in st albans, so you might get lucky with them as well.
As far as vets, it will probably be easier to find something once you actually move, if you do end up moving. It can be hard to find things like that online sometimes. I'm sure there are some vets close to where you're going. Even if they don't say they are small animal vets, if there aren't any in the area, regular vets will often be willing to get the medicine you need. The most common reason you would need to take your rats to the vet for is antibiotics, so you could just pay them to order it in for you, and you can do the same with pain killers if ever needed. If your rats ever need anything more serious like surgery for tumors, you might have to take a little road trip. But hopefully that won't happen.
It's good to be checking things out ahead of time so you are prepared, but don't worry about it too much if you can't find anything online, especially since you don't even know if you are definitely moving or not.
