I have an old imac g4 tower, it needs software updating badly so much so it doesn't recognise my apple airport thing, I was wondering if I got my toshiba laptop and ran an Ethernet from it to the mac would it supply internet to it and therefore allow it to update? Thanks in advance

Update:

the mac is in a different room to the modem and airport, can't connect directly

Update 2:

Update 3:

went to control panel and did everything there then connected ethernet to 2 computers but says ppoe server not found on the mac

    No!!!!

Run the Ethernet from your modem to your iMac!!!!

If you really want to update I would think you'd move something to get the updates!

What OS are you running? And what updates do you need?

I guess you went back to bed! Can't blame you for that!!!!

    Well 10.4 is Tiger!!!!!

Your Windows laptop should have a thing called Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), if you search for it via the Start Menu search field (or Google), you should get some help on the configuration.

At least I know it works perfectly the other way around – Vista laptop with no wifi connected via ethernet cord to a MacBook with Wifi connection to internet. On the Mac side, I simply needed to activate Internet Sharing in the network preferences and allow sharing of the Wifi Internet connection with computers connected to the ethernet port. That was all, so I guess chances are good.

As for the iMac G4,you should check if it has an Airport (=Wifi) card at all. Apple menu->About this Mac. And see that you install at least OS X 10.4 Tiger.

10.4 is Tiger. If the G4 is faster than 870 MHz, it can even take 10.5 Leopard...

Found the settings in Windows 7:

    - Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center

    - Click on the active Wireless Network Connection (info window opens)

    - Click on ‘Properties’ button.

    - Choose ‘Sharing’ tab.

    - Checkmark ‘Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection’

Now, hopefully this is sufficient for sharing. If it isn’t, I’m afraid, there will be more stuff to configure…
