Full synthetic oil back to regular?

I put full synthetic oil in my new subaru and was told that I could never go back to regular oil if I wanted to because it would damage the engine. Is this true?

Who ever you told you that doesn't know squat about motor oil. You absolutely can switch back, any time you want. Other than the price of full synthetic oil there are no reasons ever to switch back.Ease of cold weather starting and better detergent properties is well worth the added cost.

Walmart is the least expensive to buy Mobil1. Their choice of quality oil filters is terrible. NAPA and Carquest oil filters are made by Wix. Advance Auto has Purolator Gold.

Full synthetic oil does not cost any where near twice as much as conventional oil.

Synthetic oil is always superior to conventional oil.

The question here is whether or not it's worth the cost in your case.

Considering the fact that synthetic oil can cost twice as much as conventional oil, you need to consider which is best in your case.

Unless you have a very high compression engine that is used extremely hard, the chances are that synthetic oil wouldn't provide any greater edge than regular oil changes using conventional oil.

Personally, I lean towards the use of conventional oil, and spending a little more for a very good quality oil filter, while following the change intervals suggested in the owner's manual.

Regardless of the claims of extreme mileage between oil changes, you need to consider that one of the primary functions of oil is to keep contaminants in suspension so they don't damage the engine.

With that in mind, it's reasonable to consider that there is a point at which any oil can't hold more contaminants in suspension regardless of how "good" the oil claims to be.

Basically, this boils down your your particular situation, engine usage and demands made on your engine during normal use.

No. Oil Is Oil. Just stick to detergent oil.

In fact, if you have leaks, convential oil shrink seals and in this case would be slightly better. Syn expands seals and makes any leak worse.

When you First go to syn, it is best to use a blend . If engine dirty, pure syn gets dirty real soon. Even thou oil rated to last longer, it Still gets dirty. So, no advantage in the first change, you still need change it in 4,000 or so.

The Second, you can leave in muy mucho longer.

Country Boy: I've seen conventional at $2.65, and $6.00 a qt. Syn, at $3.85 to $6 a qt and up to $9. So, you can't say syn isn't "twice as much". Can be Just as much, or 3-4x. Depending.

As long as you use the right weight oil it will be no problem. If this is a car you are going to keep long term 125k-150k it is worth the extra money for synthetic. At my work we have pickup trucks that have 300k to 400k on them and they are still going strong
