Solar power for homes question?

Just curious if anyone out there is presently using solar power for their home and if so, what would you suggest for someone who is looking for a large scale unit? What dollar amount am I looking at? Any information on this would be extremely appreciated and helpful.

From $20-50k for large scale. Viability is dependent on your location:

Our house has about 3 kW of solar, which is enough to meet our modest needs. It was installed in 2006, when prices were higher and rebates lower. The cost was $12k out of pocket. Prices have fallen considerably since then.

How much it costs, and whether it makes financial sense at all, depends heavily on where you live. In Honolulu, for example, they get effectively a 65% rebate on the cost, there is a good amount of sun, and electricity rates are already high from the grid. The case for Kentucky, where coal is abundant, is not good, and Alaska, with low effective sun, is also poor.

I have 4.8 kilowatts of solar panels on my south facing roof.

It cost me around $8000 out of pocket through a company called REC Solar. I live in an area with a power company who wants to encourage solar and so the power company pays rebates, which REC Solar keeps as part of their payment.

No one can answer how much a system will cost you without knowing what your local incentives are. You have to check into these yourself.
