Taken in isolation it sounds stupid. BUT, the US has caused itself many problems (massive urban sprawl, lack of public transit infrastructure, a preponderance of gas guzzling cars and trucks, poor energy efficiency in houses, etc) because low gasoline prices encourage waste and a unwise dependence on foreign oil. I suspect the reasoning behind the statement (assuming it's true) is that higher prices would provide an incentive for major changes in people's habits and help move the US toward energy self sufficiency. Obviously, a rapid change would be unfair and devastating to the public, so while the objective may be valid, implementing it is problematic.

I think they are really worried Obama won't win the election and want their Violent Revolution to happen ASAP! Hurting America and the worlds people - they think will start it off for them.
