Why is it rewarding to pretend that other people secretly believe what you believe?

Examples:

* Insistences that if I ever encounter a personal crisis, I'll leap to believe in your deity.

* Insistences that I'll convert on my death bed.

* Insistences that I secretly believe in your particular deity.

What is the root of this particular mindset?

Update:

I'd rather like to get some theistic input, particularly if you personally cannot accept that I lack belief in any deities.

    being so close minded that you just can't even fathom that people have viewpoints other than your own
