Brilliant Beautiful Papyrus plant people what am I doing wrong overwintering?

I have successfully harvested (Cyperus papyrus) seed, started their microscopic seedlings (yes, you need a magnifying glass when using paper towel germination), and grown them to 8 ft tall (glorious), but I can't keep them over winter inside. What's the trick?

ICU, it would be nice to be able to Email you via your avatar...mine works.

Mean? RSct? Sheil? Pond? Fluff? Sci?...Anybody with roots for brains?

Update 3:

Mean, first overwinter failure; brought in 7 gallon, 8+ foot talls, put in garden tub, east light (only light available) Longs, SC !what! Zone 7?b, kids left in ground tried to grow, frost kill. Those inside eventually failed even with heat, pseudo light, and lots of water.

Guess I should just stick with the dwarf haspan or alternifolius if I want them indoors in winter. Dammit and ratz.

"If you live in a colder climate, consider your papyrus an annual to dispose of at season’s end – or let it die back in fall and overwinter the dormant nursery pot in a sheltered location that’s dark, cool and won’t freeze. (Even if you overwinter, shorter seasons don’t really allow enough time for papyrus to achieve the same stature and lushness as new greenhouse-grown plants.)"

I found I have to overwinter the plants in my garage as this plant does not tolerate freezing.

not much help, as I've never grown them, but such as it is......

Cyperus seems impossible to kill, no matter what. I think I would just let it freeze and return in the spring. Or as the tops fall over and form roots, just cut one off and let it keep growing indoors. I would put it in the dark in the garage and let it go dormant. I am pretty sure that would work. It could be the lack of a dormant time that contributes to your cyperus' failure to thrive.

I only had success with the starter plants you sent me years ago, they got to 6' that summer and looked great.

I tried to regrow them again from seed here in Z4 Dakota for several years and gave up.

However, the red stemmed philo you sent at the same time is flourishing.
