Why are carbohydrates phosphorylated inside of the cell?

    1. Keeps glucose from leaking back out. Seriously.

    2. "Activates" glucose so that it can enter any of the subsequent pathways--glycolysis, pentose phosphate shunt or glycogen synthesis.
