Is there any way to get VirtualDub to work on my W7 machine?

I used VD on my Vista computer to embed Aegisub created subtitles on my videos. I have a new 64 bit W7, Intel i7 QM machine but can't get the recommended 32 bit version of VD to work on it. I get a message that mfc90u.dll is missing and, after going through the Compatibility wizard and switching to XP Sp2, get a message that VD is incompatible. VirtualDub opens but the subtitle filter I've added is never recognized.

Is there any hope? I need to embed the subtitles not just view them with the videos.

Virtual Dub does officially support Windows 7 but I believe only on 32bit, So i think this is an operating system compatibility problem with 64bit Win 7. It may only work on XP with service pack 3 installed though [as Microsoft no longer support XP SP2 at all and so many software developers only support SP3 too] and the XP compatibility wizard can only run certain software not compatible with windows 7.

The error about the dll could be down it being moved [not in place VirtualDub expects to find it] or the version of the file on your 64bit system is not compatible.

VirtualDub website does have a good knowledge base FAQ and you can also choose "contact us" option for support: http://virtualdub.org/virtualdub_kb.html

But as you are trying to run a piece of software for a 32bit system on a 64bit system that probably can't help you much.

If VirtualDub is so vital to you then you may want to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro, which comes with the full XP compatibility functionality and allows you to run XP within Windows 7.

OK, first the missing dll message. For some mysterious reason this is caused by the vs filter that you renamed from a dll to a vdf file and copied to VirtualDub's Plugins folder. Once you remove this filter from the Plugins folder, the program opens fine.

There are a couple of complicated solutions online. I've tried everything I can think of that's simple to do so one of the complicated ones might be what's needed.

You might try the newest version of Aegisub (3.2.1). According to the changelog, SSA files can be exported. VirtualDub's Subtitler plugin can handle .ssa files (but not .*** files).

Source(s): I could've written your question. The Aegisub .ass subtitles were easy to embed with VirtualDub on my Vista machine but impossible to embed with my Windows 7, i7 QM, 64 bit machine. I got another video editor that will add subtitles so I haven't worried about the problem for a while ...until your question popped up tonight.
