Should government have the power to order parents to buy school uniforms?

I've never heard of any 'government' ever demanding parents to buy school uniforms. All state and private schools have the rights, for having there own uniform requirements. As for expense, it's much cheaper having your children wear uniforms to school.

There is less wear and tear on there clothes, also you don't have them throwing tantrums. To buy a $300 pair of jeans with a hole in the knee, or $200 sport shoes, because little Tommy Rich-buck's and other kids are wearing them. With all kids wearing a uniform there is less in school bullying, also hurtful verbal separatism of being rich and poor, or truancy from school. The local police can spot them much easier, being in a school uniform, and identify the school there attending.

Also with all the weirdos around, if your kid gets abducted, it's easier for a witness or a parent to describe the school uniform. Then trying to mentally think what your child was wearing, when they left the house. Or loosing any valuable time find out which school has a missing child a witness seen abducted.

Academically they also do much educationally better and socially communicate, being there wearing the same school uniform and shoes, there not seen any different than each other. Nor distracted by what there going to wear, or being taunted there parents are financially poor or unemployed. Or the silly little divided groups they all have, or having to be a rich kid to be popular. or your kid dressing like gang bangers, nerds, etc. Also not having to hear your kid say they hate you, because you afford to buy $200 shoes because one kid is wearing, and they want them too. Also you can buy second hand school uniforms, and sell or swap your kids uniform to get them a bigger one as they grow. Financially it's cheaper on you, most school uniforms are just a polo top, sweater and trousers (winter) or polo top, shorts (boys) or skirt (girls) in summer, K-mart always has that stuff, and school shoes $15-20. If they have a school logo, you can sew it on, or have it embroidered on.

I think, if schools are going to require specific uniforms, they should make reasonable provisions for lower-income students (who otherwise could get their school clothes used, or wear hand-me-downs from older relatives, or the like), but as long as such provisions are made, and the decision to require uniforms is made through a transparent process with public input, and reasonable provisions are also made to not require unreasonable clothing choices (forcing girls to wear skirts, forcing kids to wear clothes far too warm or cool for the weather, etc), it's fine with me.

Schools that mandate uniforms are not usually not public. Even if a public school decided to have uniforms, the school enforces it, not the government.

Of course. If you want to go to the govt school you have to follow their rules. You have to buy your kid clothes anyway so what difference does it make. If you don't like home school your kids or put them in a private school that doesn't require uniforms.

According to Obama - yes. (as long as the parents aren't Black. In that case, the government buys the uniforms for them).

Certainly not the federal government. Municipal governments (which own and operate public schools) operate under state constitutions, so the constitutionality is different.

If the government is democratically elected, then , yes, the government should have that power. The limiting rule here is the rule of the ballot box.

It should be the decision of the parents of the students, which would be local government.

All of the schools in our town require that ALL students wear school T-shirts. As this is a legal requirement it answers your question...Yes!
