The broadcast season lasts about 32 weeks while the networks order shows in batches of 22 episodes. That leaves 10 weeks (2 1/2 months) during the broadcast season when any one of your favorite shows will be either a re-run, or be replaced by a special or sporting event. The networks use holidays like Christmas or Easter to run special shows. Competing networks prefer to use a re-run rather than a new episodes if they know they are going up against sporting events or specials that could draw off their audience.
