Should I abandon my hobby?

Model airplanes...been building & flying them since I was a kid. This past weekend I experienced the ugly truth of being a female in a male dominated hobby. I had only been at the field for 5min when one of the men came up to me telling me "you need to pack up your sh*t & leave. Go back to the f*cking kitchen where you belong." The other men applauded him for it. I was too upset to remain so I left. The only women there were the wives & they weren't flying. On the way out one of the wives kicked me and another one told me I'm not permitted to return unless I'm there with a man as support....no flying.

This field is on county owned property in a public park. The posted rules state anyone can fly as long as they Ave an AMA Id. AMA is Academy of Model Aeronautics. I pointed that out but was threatemed with consequences if I didn't leave. Normally I fly at a park 5 min from my house but the cops stopped me.

I don't want to quit the hobby but I don't see any choice since I have nowhere to fly.

Is quitting my only option?

Update:

@As you wish!...Going to court isn't going to solve anything since I can't afford a lawyer. I told my dad about that episode at the field. That really angered him.

@Joey.....Thanks! ...but going at different times isn't an option for me. The park is too far away to go during the week so I can only go on the weekend. ...and every Saturday and Sunday it is the same group of flyers. 1st time I went there dad was with me so nothing like that was said.

@Donya...the guy who said that was a constable out of uniform. My dad and I looked at clubs in the past before the public field was open. The clubs in my area aren't an option because of the membership cost....$250 to join + $150/month dues on average. I only work a min wage job. Besides that...most of these clubs are only open to those flying really large models. Mine are little bitty electrics.

@Lili....The hobby is fun as long as you don't have jerks around...like those peeps at the park. I doubt there was any jealousy

Update 2:

YAY!!! I definitely don't have to quit now. :) My dad surprised me. He bought me this airplane: http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/night-vapor-r... It's actually a late bday present. So small and light it can fly in my front yard! I already got a flight in on it...soooo much fun!

This needs to be reported to the local authorities ASAP If the park is open to the public. This is 2012 for heaven's sake. Look for a club that is listed in your area. These people sound uneducated and ignorant of the law. I don't think you should hang out with them anyway.

No way lady, it's just like me asking you if i should stop drawing, NO!! There will always be a person who will be all bitchy about you. Remember that we don't live in a beautiful world anymore. But anyway, isn't there like airplane museums anywhere? you could try asking them, if you could use their space. Or just ask those people if they're the owners, if they are then tell them to change their rules, or get out. I think that the only reason they were yelling at you is because they were jelous of you and your creative hobby :) please dont quit this hobby though, i bet its fun and hard to lose

I guess you could quit, that is the easy way out, and if you watch too much TV, like me, then quitting is less likely to result in some kind of misogynistic revenge scenario a la Boys Don't Cry.

On the other hand, anyone who tries to stop you from flying is infringing your basic constitutional rights as well as being sexist. You could take them to court, but that's expensive... or you could go undercover with a hidden camera and microphone, record them being sexist a**holes that have no trouble denying you your constitutional rights, and then take the video to some media outlet that will pay you a bunch of money so that you can move somewhere where women are welcome to fly model airplanes if they so desire. you could then take them to court as well.

it is totally ridiculous that people are still enabling such sexist attitudes and environments to continue.

No do not quit. No matter what you do there will allways be idiots like that and drones who are to weak to do anything about it. There are alway other options and where you may not see them right now becaue you are upset they will come to you. Go different times and with other people and teach them the joy you feel from your hobby. You will then have back up and sharing what you love with others.

Me! I do this each and each 365 days. Get each little thing one needs to accomplish a little embroidery and come to a decision it is going to be my challenge for those long, chilly iciness nights. I even have all started such numerous by the years, not at all finished them and as we are packing to bypass to a sparkling abode ... I even have an entire field of those. i've got for sure desperate to do them as quickly as we pass in yet why i will or not is yet another tale LOL

Maybe its about time you acted like a lady instead of a tomboy. Model airplanes will always be a "for men/boys only" hobby. Hopefully this incident opened your eyes to reality.

Another thing....the men at the field simply didn't want you there because they didn't want to have to answer to the wife about why he was hanging around another woman. No matter what you do I think you'll find your presence at any location will be most unwelcome. My suggestion to you....drop out of the model airplanes and pick another hobby....like sewing or knitting.

Yes, you should quit. When you were a kid you should have been playing with Barbie and Ken, not model airplanes.

My boyfriend flys those damn model airplanes. Personally, I don't see what is so fun about them. They are noisy, messy, and smelly....ewwww! Also extremely dangerous. One of the guys got 2 of his fingers cut off!!! After that I keep encouraging my bf to quit flying but he won't. If you want to keep your fingers and your manicure I sugges you drop out like a good girl.
