Above ground garden? Help?

I have an above ground garden in my rented yard, not getting too far with it, it has an abundance of seaside daisies in it, that turn black in winter, (now), I just cut them back, the soil is very sandy, recently bought a couple of bags of sheep manure, is this going to help. The garden is about 10 ft x 10 ft round, with a pretty ordinary stone wall, starting to fall apart, thanks for your help

    Diane,

Sounds like it's time for a makeover in the garden, in the soil department. A good sandy base is great to start with, it gives you great drainage, your off to a great start. If you can build a base of soil about 12 to 14 inches deep on top of that sand, made of of organic soil materials, you will have a great garden.

I would not use the sheep manure. It is most likly too strong and will burn your plants. Perhaps if you spread that manure out for a year or so, let it dry, and mix it with some lots of soil, it may be safe. Is it store or bought, or from a friend? Be carefull with it.

If you buy bulk bags of soil, it would take about 8 bags of soil to fill your garden. Mix the bags up by buying garden soil, mushroom manure, and top dressing. A few bags of Sea Soil organics to get things moving will help your garden soil to start processing itself.

    Good luck with you Garden

Get a bucket of your dirt and take it to your local nursery. They can test your soil and get the right PH level and tell you how to balance the soil. If you don't know where your baseline is you could be tossing $$ down the drain.

don't over fertilise it or the plants will get burned ditch the sandy soil try a goof red dirt if you can and don't over water rotate legumes with plamys as they put nitrogen back into the soil
