Did Charles II of England marry his mistress Lucy Walters and later deny doing so?

Explain the descent of Lady Diana Spencer from Lucy by way of Mary Crofts and her daughter, Charlotte Sarsfield (1676-1732).

Update:

Charles II and Lucy Walters' son was James, Duke of Monmouth, whom Charles II publicly acknowledged as his natural son. By way of contrast, Charles II never acknowledged Lucy's daughter, Mary Croft. However, Charles II did financially support Mary the rest of her life. Conveniently, she was removed to Ireland where she married a William Sarfield. Several generations later, Lucy's descendants married into the Spencer family.

Update 3:

Sorry, the additional details were copied twice.

Update 4:

No, this isn't a homework assignment. I'm just fascinated by the fact that so many prominent Brits descend from this relationship, and yes, I'm aware of the "novelization" of Charles and Lucy's romance,.

My dear Evie, one very much hopes that this is not a homework assignment!

Now, it is quite true that King Charles II did marry his mistress Lucy Walters, and later denied that such an event took place. You know, one has always been quite the fanatic of our Merry Monarch - such a wonderfully loveable cad and bounder!

There is no evidence of such a marriage. Charles knew he had a chance of regaining the throne, and of course if he did, Lucy Walter would not make a suitable wife for a king. He also had no need to marry her, by all accounts. She wasn't the kind of woman who would have held out for marriage.

Diana Spencer and her kin were not the only well-known descendants of this relationship. Sarah Ferguson, too, is a descendant of Lucy Walter and Charles II. Charles had so many illegitimate children by various mistresses that by now, a quarter of the UK must be somehow related to him. Among his other descendants are Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Samantha Cameron, wife of the Prime Minister.

An interesting novel based on the premise that Charles did marry Lucy is Elizabeth Goudge's "The Child from the Sea".

    This question is unanswerable.

There is no credible evidence to suggest that Charles II married Lucy Walters. If he had done so, then his son Charles would and should have become King as the only legitimate heir of Charles II.

This would not have meant that Diana would have become Queen. In fact, it would have legitimized a huge bunch of people but Diana would not have become Queen.
