How does a civilian get a hold of a military record?
I am a military parent and wondering how I can get a transcript of my sons military records? Is there a website that I can go to? What is needed to get that information?
The reason I need this is a long and involved story and for personal reasons I will not make that public.

The "Command" nor anyone else is authorized to hand over this information or records if that person is still living. It is protected information just as I walked up to you and demanded your SSN, Date of Birth and all that pertains to your life.
If you have a legitimate reason for this and the person is no longer with us then go here...otherwise..you're spinning your tires and the military takes its members privacy just as seriously as you take yours.

I have ordered copies of my Service records through those websites people are listing, and the only thing I get back is Proof that I served, not my actual records.
Only the person who served can get full copies of their Service Records

The Privacy Act of 1974 forbids the release of your son's records to you. The only thing that's available to you is a very limited summary of his service.

You are anyone else can get a summarized copy of his service record by submitting an SF-180 or by submitting one electronically here..on line at eVETRECS....

The Privacy Act applies to SSNs guys...not to service records that are public records...
Edit:
Like I said..I get records all of the time...for Vets, Family Members and the curious civilian who is tired of his neighboors "war stories" and wants to know the truth...
Look at this website:
http://www.pownetwork.org/phonies/list_of_names.ht...
Chock full of records..DD-214s, service jackets, 2-1 files...ALL gotten through FOIA request to verify (or not) these phonies claims...
Love how you guys post sh*t you know NOTHING about...yet I get the thumbs down...your military record is PUBLIC domain....

Submit a request to his commander/unit. There are ways of acquiring information from the HRC command, but it is best to be respectful of the chain of command. If you were my parent, I would not object, but the command has the right to deny/approve such an inquiry.
