I got a ticky question about engines, which do you think is a better engine?

I've driven a lot of cars but this one catch my attention when I was in eastern europe.

Which do think is a better engine?

both engines have the same displacement with 2.5 liters (2498cc),

The other one is a straight 4 cylinder with DOHC

and the other is a V6 also DOHC

the thing is its the same car with that option. Nissan Teana. The local market has a Nissan QR25DE. and the imported japanese version marked as infiniti has a VQ25HR.

im optimisitc about the V6 version coz its theoretically more powerful because of the two more cylinders and gives smoother response as well. but the fuel economy will be affected?

and the 4 cylinder. most eco cars are efficient with 4 cylinders. but with 2.5 liters? what do you think?

so which is a better engine and is a practical one? assuming they have around $1500 price difference. the V6 is really tempting coz its just the same displacement as the 4 cyl version.

Thanks,

Natalya

Fuel economy is not just about the number of cylinders. There are many other factors including displacement, gearing, vehicle weight, aerodynamics, etc. The same goes for power.

Very generally speaking, the more cylinders an engine has, the smoother it will be but modern manufacturers make very smooth 4 cylinder engines these days as well.

I'd test drive both and see which one feels the best to you.

Firstly, the VQ25HR is a great engine; the HR moniker on the engine means it is a "High Response" engine... Which is just Nissan's special way of saying "built with performance in mind". Need proof? The VQ35HR is in the same series and is in the Nissan 350Z.

Anyway, the VQ25HR is actually more powerful; not in theory, but in reality. It is more powerful, smoother, and is very easily repaired as the engine is plentiful and found in MANY Nissan cars.

The QR is less powerful, but will have more economy. Yes, it is a big 4-cylinder engine, but the fact that the QR is specced less aggresively than the VQ, and weighs less, means that it will get better fuel economy.

So it's up to you; do you want power? Get the VQ. Want economy more? Get the QR.
