Cutting a sphere into squares?

I want to make a computer model that will render a sphere the size of the earth into 1x1 meter squares. I know that making perfect squares is impossible, but is there any model that slightly distorts each part of the grid to so to the human eye, they will still look like squares.

    Yes. Look at the longitude and latitude lines on a globe.
