Minimalist/barefoot shoe recommendations?
I am morbidly obese but trying to get healthy without surgery. ..and I want to start walking. I have been wearing crocs everywhere, even work (super casual dress code...shorts/flip flops ok) but the material has started irritating my skin. Since I had very little money and my old sneakers were just too tight I bought a pair of el cheapo aqua socks from WalMart. Walking in them feels like I'm barefoot. :) I love it. ...but they are loose in the forefoot and nearly slip off my feet when I walk. Another thing I also noticed is the near lack of back pain when I walk from the back of the parking lot in the aqua socks. If I wore crocs or other regular sneakers my back would be hurting so bad I would be in tears so I was always trying to park close. Even then my back would still be really hurt. Because of the difference I feel walking in the aqua socks I am very interested in purchasing a pair of minimalist shoes. ...but I have a problem that will probably keep me out of them....my feet. They are wide. Wide enough to where I can only wear men's wide width sneakers. No women's shoes at all. ...and because of my weight I also suffer from edema (swollen legs/feet). ..and take prescription meds for it. I'm hoping my weight loss + diet change will end the problem.
So far I have tried on the New Balance Minimus. I loved the way it felt but it was slightly too narrow, but it wasn't the wide width version since the store didn't have any. It looked wide so I thought it was wide. oh well. I also tried out the Vibrams at another store...the speed (figured this style would work for my puffy foot) but couldn't get it on (probably because I never tried these on before and had no idea how to do it easily). Next I tried the classics but they were very tight across the top of my foot and the pockets were tight on some of my toes.
Would the KSO model be stretchier? Any other shoe recommendations? ...and am I just too fat for these types of shoes?
suszcza....I love being totally barefoot and do so but only on my own property. Beyond that it just isn't safe because of people chucking glass bottles in the street and what not. Besides that my neighborhood is paved in rocky black ashpalt...doesn't feel nice to bare feet at all, especially this time of year when it is sooo hot. Can't walk in the grass beside the street either...all the land that isn't used for homes is posted "no tresspassing". I like walking at the local park but there are signs posted requiring all visitors to wear shoes.

Don't waste your money on supposedly "barefoot" shoes. Just go completely barefoot. Plain honest bare feet are a lot healthier and cheaper too.

The intent your again likely feels higher is that less of each foot strike is going via your heels - this changes the way the vigor is dissipated within the shrink physique. What I endorse is you go try on a whole bunch of going for walks shoes. Go to a jogging-detailed sporting events retailer if that you may, they'll have extra stuff, and have them support you. You don't necessarily must purchase from them, but the one technique to decide upon shoes is to try on shoes. I'd endorse looking into Nike, they more often than not have vast models of most of their footwear (looks like runners both love or hate Nike sneakers, nothing in between). I might preclude the toe-kind ones like Vibrams for now, as your body will possible exchange and what fits your toes at present won't in a couple of months - minimalist footwear can also be tightened with the laces, but the toe pockets on Vibrams can not, and shoes that slide around can blister your ft.

Money is an issue. You are looking at 70-120 bucks. I don't know of any "wide" type of minimalist shoes. Here is what I think: diet change great, more walking (even better), shoe selection (good question). Since you brought up your weight then I would take a look at this article;

I understand you are not a runner yet and I don't know if you pron-ate but it is a good article to read so that you know what muscles are weak that may need some help first before you have an aggressive walking regimen. I.e. you may invest your shoe money into an exercise therapist. The corrective exercises he/she gives you may help you attain your early weight goals while thinning your feet... and giving you a bigger selection after a few months of corrective exercises.
