Is this an error or base hit?

Let's say a batter hits a ground ball to SS.

SS makes a throw that makes the first basement to step out of the bag allowing the runner to be safe. (He still caught ball though, did not go past him)!

Is that an error?

It depends on how hard a play it was in the first place. If it's a normal effort ground ball and an accurate throw would have gotten the runner out, then it's an error. If it was a difficult stop of the ball or the throw would have been late anyway, then it's a hit.

Two things required for it to be an error: the bad throw pulled F3 off of 1B, AND a good throw would have beaten the runner.

If the runner would have beaten the throw, it's a hit, even if the throw pulls F3 off of the bag.

If a throw pulls the 1st baseman off the bag, it's an error on the throw -- in this case E6.

If a normal, on-line throw to the first baseman would have retired the runner, that would be an error on the shortstop.

that is a throwing error on the shortstop because if he wouldve had a clean throw, the person wouldve been out, but he forced the 1st basemen off the bag. it just happened last week in a phillies game against the Rockies.

If he came off the back then it is a error.

    Bad throw. ERROR.

Error on the runner. He should have sympathized with the short stop and slowed down.
