No it's not similar to Montreal. New Orleans isn't even similar to Montreal. There is no real city in North America that is quite like Montreal, that's how unique it is.

Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, was founded by the French in 1642.
San Francisco was founded by the Spanish in 1776.
And Canadian French is still the language spoken by the majority of Quebeckers.
Montreal is an inland city on an island in the St. Lawrence river.

San Francisco is a sea-side city on the Pacific ocean.
Montreal is Quebec's largest city. And quite pretty:

San Fran isn't California's biggest city.
Canada as a nation has one-tenth of America's population.
But Canada's the world's 2nd largest nation in size; only Russia's larger.
So most of Canada is unspoiled wilderness that's over 50% covered in forests.
That's the largest amount of boreal forest on planet Earth.
So like many Canadian cities, forests aren't far away:

Including the famed Laurentian Mountains (called the Laurentides in French):

So all in all, San Francisco and Montreal are totally different cities.

Montreal is mainly French speaking. It is a large urban cosmospolitan city with a lot of Indian and Arab immigrants. The weather gets cold in the winter and it snows. There are lakes and greenery. Montreal is near the St. Lawrence and not near the ocean. It is probably humid in summer. So ther is NO similarity to San Francisco.

I would say Toronto would be more similar to San Fran because of the Street Cars, but other than that Toronto is most like Chicago and NYC. Montreal is more like a European city like Paris or London

Kayla, Mae, nothing like it, I would prefer Montreal over San Francisco any day.

to the people who say Montreal is a french city, you're wrong. It's in fact a bilingual, hell, a multilingual city in canada. Founded by the french in 1642, but mainly built by the British, you will not regret your trip in one of the one of the most vibrant and unique city in north america...btw, san fransisco seems to be quite different in term of style!
