Can anyone give my more information on this 1831 military letter? Please Helpp!?

I recently bought a US 1831 New York State Militia Discharge letter. In this letter general john h. Knapp is requesting to to resign. What war would this be or around what war would this letter be talking about?

    Is it talking about a war? It wouldn`t necessarily have to do with a war. There weren`t any wars going on then. In 1832 the Black Hawk War started, however.

    Uh...the US military has existed for 237 years guy...whether there was a war or not.
