Prometheus would not join Atlas in the wars against the Olympians, so as to gain their trust.
He was indeed favoured by the Olympians and he made little replicas of them out of mud.
Athena was so charmed that she breathed life into them. Prometheus wanted these little mortal dolls to have knowledge, but Zeus objected and said that they could live only on Earth with no access to his heavenly access and were to be denied knowledge or immortality.
This incident was part of Promnetheus' plan to justify his planned stealing of the Fire to help humankind.
Prometheus stole fire from the Olympians and gave it to humankind.
Zeus found out and punished him by chaining him to a rock.
Prometheus' liver was eaten by a bird of prey every day, only to be renewed every night.
Nevertheless, his mission to help humankind was a success !

Because Prometheus forsaw the fall of Kronos at the hands of the Olympians. He knew the punishment of defying Zeus would be severe. So he switched sides to be spared. Many actually foresaw the defeat of the Titans, one of them was Prometheus, since he is the titan of foresight.
