Would someone please prove me wrong?
I believe any kid (that has the money) under the age of 18 can purchase a boat or car, register it, and have the title in his/her name. I believe a kid can do this in every state in the USA.
My question is: Can you prove me wrong?
FYI - I called the Texas DOT yesterday, so I know a kid can do this in Texas.
TX DOT told me: "Texas has no age minimum or restrictions for anyone to buy, register or own title to a boat or motor vehicle."
So my question is: Is there ANY state - that says "a person must be 18 or over to buy, register, and have title to a boat or car" ?
I am looking for "proof" in the form of a link to any State's DOT or DMV.
Thank you!
ibeboating. . . You have made a bad assumption when you say that "Civil law or Common law trumps DOT or DMV in this matter" - those are your words, and obviously not correct, as in TX, LA, AL, TN, NC, as these states have confirmed they have "no age restrictions" for anyone under 18 to buy, register, and own exclusive title to a car or boat (no, parent, guardian, or co-signers needed).
Furthermore - (if you don't believe me) check out the link below from New York State. Obviously NY has a "age of majority of 18" but (even in New York) the DMV says you can own, register, and have title to a boat or car in your name at age 16 (no co-signers needed).

Civil law or Common law trumps DOT or DMV in this matter. Please rsfer to question bullet : Who may enter a contract. A minor ,, being under 18 , may not enter a contract except if emancipated or member or armed forces. However an adult co-signer could seal a deal. No contract no purchase. A purchase is a contract.
