Quickly verify a check?

If someone writes me a check from an account at a specific bank, can I bring it to any nearby branch of that same bank and ask them to verify, right then, that there are sufficient funds in that account to cover the check?

I'm asking because I'm going to be selling my car and I would like to avoid being ripped off!

Yes you can. You're asking if the check is good, not the bank balance. As long as you're there, cash the check. They can stop payment as soon as you leave the bank.

Nope - you can't do that. It would be violating the privacy of the person who wrote you the check. You can ask the person to pay you in a cashier's check, or you can tell him you won't sell the car until the check clears. If it were me, I'd ask for a cashier's check. He can go to his bank branch and the banker will take, say $1,000 out of his account and put it in the bank's personal account. Then, the bank will write him a check for $1,000. You will then be paid technically with the bank's money, not his money, and a cashier's check is guaranteed to clear.

Yes, but cash it then. Just because there's money in the account then doesn't mean there will be the next day.

Ok this is why you do CASH ONLY when selling things like this! It is less complicated and more secure (just do it at a police station).
