No offense, but I think I've heard this quote before.
It's a good quote, nonetheless. Your life should be dictated by your own self, not others. It's also true that oftentimes people befriend each other through a common interest. You might have a buddy you play tennis with, or a pal that you enjoy talking to about the latest TV drama.
If I want to play devil's advocate though, I would mention that sometimes you can pick up a hobby through a friend - I wasn't really into comic books until a certain friend of mine introduced me to them.
Still, in the end, I agree with your quote.
