When I sell my car? (Insurance question)?

When I sell my car to someone, do I need to make sure they have insurance? When I bought a new car, the car dealer checked to see if I had auto insurance, but on my state's web page about selling a car (Oregon), there is no mention of anything about insurance. I also haven't seen this issue mentioned on various sites that tell you how to sell your car.

When doing a private sale it is NOT your responsibility to make sure the buyer has insurance. However to protect the seller, Some US states require the seller to fill out a notice that must sent to your DMV stating that you sold your car on ____Date______ Time___ Buyers name____etc. Check out your states rules on their DMV website.

If you keep your tags, you turn them in the call your insurance to cancel coverage, the other person is responsible then, as long as you hav signed that title over. The dealer requires you show proof to protect themselves in case you drive out and have an accident, since they are tagging the car for you

    Very good question.

If you are selling a car you must do so without any license tags. The buyer then must buy the car and take your title to the DMV and show his insurance certificate to get his tags and registration. If you allow your tags to remain on the car you are totally responsible if there is any accident.

No, the dealer would have need your proof of ins, if they registered the car for you. So when drove off the lot, you have valid Oregon tags. You do need them to sign your title, so you will no longer be liable for the car. I am in Connecticut, and we must return the old tags as soon as your ins is canceled, unless you transfer them to another car.
