I made them long before OBSH did, you need a sweet onion, make the cuts, soak in salt water for 3-4 hours for them to bloom or longer then do a 3 stage seasoned flour, egg/milk (buttermilk is best) and flour again dredge, then fry them but not excessively hot as you want the onions to cook and be crisp, 325 d F for 10-15 minutes almost like fried chicken, I put all purpose flour, salt, black pepper, onion and garlic powder, paprika, powdered thyme and oregano, and a bit of chili powder.

    Peel onions, cutting small slice.

Place the flour, salt, pepper, oregano and mustard. Spray the onions with cooking spray to lightly coat each petal. Put one of the onions in the bag and gently shake to coat. Remove the onion and pat off the excess flour mixture. Place in a prepared pan and repeat with the other onion.

Bake the onions in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, until tender. Serve the onion flowers hot, with your favorite barbecue sauce as a dip, or as an accompaniment with pork, or grilled steak.
