My 89 silverado will not shift out of first gear?

It will go into first gear and reverse only.

Fluid is fine, Engine runs strong, No leaks to be seen.

When I take it up to max of first gear and let off gas even on a down hill it simply coasts I can rev engine etc no effect. till it slows to 5 to 8 mph then if i hit the gass then first gear again engadges.

Ive read a bit about the tvc cable and looked at that but couldnt tell heads or tails. Does the issues Ive described sound like a tvc cable issue if so how do i check it easily... IF not What does it sound like the cause could be?

Update:

I tried tranny fix fluid ... Ill try a engine wash but the engine is pretty clean on what i can see.. Like you say might just be an old bad tranny but im hoping for a magic answer that will fix it... hopefully easy LOL I know I know tall order

Update 2:

I have started and restarted the truck many times :-)

Update 3:

Ill try hand changing the gears TY

inspect the gearbox oil meter you will locate it low or almost empty if no longer, inspect that oil cycle interior the radiator is positive try those and if no longer something new you will could get a clean gearbox or touch a mechanic could be could desire to repair this

Restart the truck ! I had an older intrepid that had a worn out transmission & that's all I had to do to is just restart it !

Source(s): Pressure wash under your hood and lubricate your linkage . But that's just what worn out trannys do when it's time for a new one , u can try Lucas anti slip but you might be wasting your money ! Good luck !
