Books where the main character battles with a disease?
My gf's birthday is next month and wanted to get her a book for one of her presents. I realised most of the books she reads all have one thing in common, the main character has some kind of serious illness that they are battling with. So, if anyone can recommend any good books that have that kind of theme it would be greatly appreciated. Please try recommend ones which are less heard of as well as popular ones (pretty sure she'll have read all the main ones)...

I use this website whatshouldireadnext.com where you put in the name of a book you really like and it gives you a list of similar books to read. So you could type in "the notebook" by Nicholas sparks and see what it says.
