It means peace and blessing of God be unto him. Usually after hearing the name of prophets especially prophet Muhammad we say this. And when hearing the name of any righteous companions of the prophet we say - may Allah be pleased with them. This is the translations from Arabic.

(Peace Be Upon Him) A rather strange blessing for a long-dead warlord.
Islam was based off more established religions, Christianity in particular, as well as several polytheistic beliefs from the local tribes. As such it makes use of the Christian characters (most of which were taken from Jewish mythology, which comes from a far older polytheistic religion), changing them to suit the founder. This is a common practice when starting a new religion.
