is it possible to trisect an angle using only pencil, ruler, and compass ?

and if so, how is it done ?

    There IS a Calculus PROOF that it cannot be done.---pretty convincing if you understand it. I remember it in University--that put an END to my own attempts. I do not remember it though

    I think it should be possible to get a very close approximation, especially if you have a flexible ruler.

    Draw a curve fold the ruler around the curve take a measurement and divide by 3. Measure a third of the curve. Measure 2/3. Done.

    Operation: To Trisect an angle of 360 degrees into three equal angles by trisection with a ruler, pencil, and compass.

    Procedure: Draw a straight line. From its centre found using ruler, pencil, and compass, draw a circle. Taking radius as length, draw three arcs to cut the circumference at three points. Join these points with the ruler and pencil to the centre of the circle individually.

    Now, measure the angle. If each angle is 120 degrees, then use calculus to find out what is 360 divided by 3. It must be 120.
