What is the origin of the train conductor's cap?

Why it's unique shape and where did it originate?

    Excellent question, and I can only speculate as to the origins.

    It was a part of the uniformed service and still is. In as much as at one time the conductor was referred to as "captain," perhaps the origin was mimicking seafaring captain's chapeau. I know that at one time on the SP, all crew members, including enginemen, wore caps with their occupation on brass badges worn around the hat-band.

    So... you're now only two cents closer to an answer...
