Someone help update my Macbook Pro mid-2009 OS X (10.5.8)?
I desperately need to update to the newest software, but I am a little confused on how I should go about doing that. I Googled it and there was a lot of advice but none very clear. Can someone give me step-by-step instructions for this? Someone must know.

"...can download and install 10.7" No, you can't. OS 10.7 is no longer on the App Store.
Apple no longer sells OS DVDs. They only offer the OS by download, and that only through the App Store, and the App Store.app is only on your computer if it is running OS 10.6.6 or later.
To get OS 10.6.6 or later, buy an OS 10.6 install DVD. Call 1-800-myapple and hope they haven't run out. If they ran out, you can pay the rip-off price from Amazon.com or...
Another way is to go to a friend's house who has a newer Mac, open App Store, log in with your Apple ID, buy "Mountain ?Lion", download it (goes to the Applications folder), copy it to a thumb drive, scoot back home, and burn a DVD or set up a USB install drive by following the steps in the article below.
To install it, either use the Disk Utility of the Installer to erase your computer (!!!) or to create a new 50GB partition for installing OS 10.8.

"I do filming, video editing, and recording track." unless your new college tells you that you just want a Mac, count on that every one purposes are for windows PCs. The final thing you need for the next 4 years is a Mac in a home windows World. But, OS X can run a full legal variation of windows 7 (OEM <> $ (99) utilising BootCamp. In case you do purchase a refurbished 2009 MacBook professional, improve it is older OS X to at the least OS X Lion 10.7.X, for you to likely need 4 GB of method RAM as will Mountain Lion (10.Eight). It's lack of RAM that slows Apple computer systems down.

Your Mac is several years out of date. The current version of the OS is 10.8. To get to 10.8 you need to purchase and install 10.6. It was released back in 2009 and is no longer sold, but Apple's customer support may be able to help you find a copy for a reasonable price - it was $30 when it was released, but new copies are going for hundreds of dollars. Once you have 10.6 installed, update to 10.6.6. From there you can download and install 10.7 and 10.8, which are $30 each.
