Why did the Republican Party decide to call themselves the Democrats?

The GOP never consciously decided to call themselves Democrats, but at one time The Democrats were MOSTLY conservative and the Republicans tended to be Liberals.It was REALLY a gradually change at first, then became a rapid transition after Civil Rights Legislation was passed.At one time the Southern states voted reliably Democrat, but now they are reliably Republican.At one time most of New England was reliably Republican, but now they are usually Democratic. Key words here should be liberal and conservative, not Republican/ Democrat.
