MtG: What does everyone think of the mechanics introduced in RtR?

1. Overload is fine and makes a card much more viable in the early game and the late game when you have the mana needed to cast for Overload.

2.Scavenge isn't my favorite mechanic in the set. Most of the Scavenge abilities cost too much mana when there's a good bit of removal in this set. Blue has a good bit of bounce and there are many kill spells.

3. Detain is a fine mechanic but I really don't know if paying more mana for a smaller creature that has Detain on it is useful. Real control would have Detain mostly on creatures with a smaller cost because late game a player can have out many creatures or have other ways of ending the game that Detaining a single permanent won't be a game breaker.

4. Unleash might be a game winner mechanic but most of these creatures don't have haste so just sit there unable to block for you. There is that huge creature that has haste, but too much mana without trample or anything.

5. Populate is pretty strong, just about the strongest in my opinion, if only because token decks are just so popular. But like like with Scavenge, Blue has a good bit of bounce in this set so that token you just populated could easily be bounced the next turn. I think Populate is really only good if it's on a body.

Overload is pretty awesome. I always liked kicker-style effects, since they allow the card to be useful at all stages in the game. And overload is quite splashy and unique in what it does.

Scavenge is quite cool. "Build-your-own-creature" effects are another one that I've always liked, and scavenge is nice and simple, but quite powerful.

I'm not a big fan of detain. Encouraging inactivity just makes for boring, bland games. And having it in the numbers required for a keyword ability makes it quite dull. And although the mechanic itself suits the Azorius, it leads to decks that don't. And that's wrong.

Unleash is horrible terribad. One of the worst mechanics yet, in my opinion. Not as bad as infect, to be fair, but that's like saying having a headache isn't as bad as being stabbed in the eye.

I've never been a fan of tokens, but I do really like populate. No idea why.
