What to do about a skunk encounter?

This morning my 90-lb Rhodesian ridgeback surprised a skunk laying up in the high grass not 3 feet from the sidewalk along the Trinity river. He actually picked it up and threw it a few feet. It waddled off apparently unhurt (Tucker has a very soft mouth when he's just playing).

I found a recipe online that actually works. 2 quarts hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup baking soda and a couple tsps liquid soap. Wet the dog, pour the mixture on, rub it in, wait a few minutes, rinse. Try to keep it out of his eyes & ears, and keep him from licking it up if you can. He's bound to ingest some, so be prepared for him to vomit a little. But a the smell will be gone immediately.

I live on 3500 acres in the country and so far, I've ended up using this "recipe" on my dogs at least once a year. We have been here 4 years and all 4 of my dogs have gotten skunked at least once....a couple of 'em have gotten it 2 or 3 times, apparently slow learners.

It definitely works; I've washed my little short-haired dogs with this stuff and they were sleeping in bed with me the same night- zero odor. A thick-coated dog who gets sprayed real bad might benefit from another wash with this stuff in a day or 2 after the first bath. First time my thick haired dog got skunked she still had a wee bit of funk to her the next day, but the 2nd bath killed it.

Sometimes odor lingers around the dog's face, since it's not advisable to let it get in their eyes. If dog got skunked hard in the face, you can take a washcloth and wipe the peroxide solution on the face, being careful to stay away from the eyes.

There are always several quarts of peroxide in my bathroom closet and a spare box of baking soda (I always have dish soap) just for this type of occasion. Peroxide's also nice for inducing vomiting if somebody eats something they shouldn't have. :)

Yeah, that's a pretty old recipe and it does work. Used it a couple of times when I didn't have anything else. I've also used the Nature's Miracle skunk deodorizer and that works well also.

Yes, I use that ratio of products on my dogs when they get hit. The key is to let it sit on the dog for about five minutes. That gives the formula a chance to absorb the odor. Then you rinse-rinse-rinse.

I give the dog a body massage while we do the five minute wait.

That's true, that recipe works. There's a bunch of other things you can do also. There's a compilation here that will be helpful. It encompasses skunks in general, how to get rid of them, how to deal with the smell in all sorts of ways etc. Have a look.

That works along with a white vinegar rinse and natures miracle. My two tore a skunk in half.

I've used that before and it works. Never had a dog vomit afterward either.
