I had an engagement party and I would estimate that 80% bought us a gift. I definitely did not expect to get so much. You do not have to get them a gift but I would not show up empty handed. Bring a card with well wishes and perhaps a bottle of wine.

That is up to you if you bring a gift or not. If you don't bring a gift than don't go empty handed. Buy a card and write the couple a check/give them money. If you want to give them a gift either give them something small at the party or save it for the actual wedding. The bride will appreciate your thoughtfulness either way and will be glad you helped made her party special!

The traditional rule is "No". However, people are starting to bring gifts.
I'd save the gift for the wedding.
