How to make an object glow with gimp?

Googles no help. I'm trying to make a energy ball glow but all it does is make the entire picture glow. I want the that particler object to glow. How?

    Make a selection of the object first before you apply the filter.

    Or extract the object from the background using a layer mask. Then apply the effect to the layer with the masked object.

    Learn about Layers, Layer Masks, and selecting if you want to learn how to use GIMP. These are what make GIMP powerful.

    Manually select that object (Lasso tool) and perhaps the area around it and make that glow.
