    Chlorine and Bromine are more stable if they can fill their electron shells. They are only missing one, which means they want that extra electron very badly.

    Copper and magnesium give up their electrons more easily. Magnesium actually wants to get rid of them, so it would react violently.

    "How bad" elements want to gain or lose electrons is given in a table of standard electrode potentials, and determines whether a reaction will occur.

    I think 4) is wrong - only solid magnesium should reduce the iron.
