Also the screen first goes black then the black and white desk top icons are large, I have uninstalled using control pannels and reinstalled twice each time restating the computer in between. I had changed in properties to use the windows 7 just before it started but changed it back to XP which I believe it had been in orginally. restarted and still the same problem, I had changed the resolutin whic I changed back alao, before uninstalling and restating.

-for the icons on desktop, click on the blank space of the desktop then click "View > Small Icon"
-to know if reinstallation back to XP was properly done, do a system file scanning so you will get the result. after done, restart again the computer.
