Do xboxes often scratch up games?
I was playing and all of a sudden my xbox 360 fell and scratched up the disc really badly. Does this happen often with xboxes ? Black Ops 2 was the first game I bought for my xbox 360 so I'm not really in a position to test it with other games. I have the slim model if that's of any importance.
I keep my xbox on the floor now so falling won't happen anymore but I want to know if anything else will cause games to get scratched.

Yes any motion to you Xbox will laser burn it that's why I recommend to everyone that has an Xbox 360 lay it flat and with 250g or more to install there games to the hard drive: it's very easy, takes about 15 min per game, disc doesn't spin while being played ( it still has to be inserted and it will spin for an initial start-up for 30 sec or so), because the game doesn't spin the Xbox becomes silent and if your game does magically gets laser burned the Xbox will still be able to read it if installed ( I've tested), Xbox life expectancy will extend for at least another year.
Steps from dashboard
1) highlight game
2) press X to bring up "game details"
3) "Install"
4) wait until window prompt comes up to notify you install has finished
5) pat yourself on the back
Don't grow your game away just yet if you can't install it you can still get money from GameStop to put towards another one and this time I recommend the $3 dollar warranty they offer for a full year. as long as you have your receipt and the disc you will be able to get the game, if something happens to it, for the $3.

In a properly mounted optical drive, NO, disc scratch is NOT proper, expected behavior, contrary to what Micheal believes. In a correctly aligned disc drive, the surface of the disc should not be making contact with the tray at any point OTHER than the rotary head on which it spins. You can more easily see this in a manual flip-top drive than the mechanical sliding tray drives like the Xbox has, but the only time it should be touching plastic is when it's actually in the tray sliding into the system. And as long as you're careful and mount the disc in there properly, it shouldn't be getting scuffed there either.
You dropped it while the disc was in the drive. Those things spin at insane RPM, and when it hit, it probably bounced off the reader head and spun around inside the housing like a shuriken in a bouncy castle. That would happen with any drive, not just an xbox. High end electronic components are not designed to suffer from major impacts.
It's hard to say if you did any major damage. If you caused the drive to become misaligned, it could very well drag every disc you put in there along the side of the drive housing and scuff the crap out of anything you put in there. My advice would be to test it with a disc you don't care about (some crappy cd or dvd, for example). If they do, time to look into contacting Microsoft or some other method of repairing it.
But in general, with ANY optical drive, you shouldn't move it at all when a disc is in it. Any motion, especially in a tight fitting drive, can jar the disc and cause it to get messed up. At the very least, wait for the drive to spin down (but really, eject the disc and power off the machine if you're gonna move it). i

The Xbox won't scratch games unless you move it. So when the game is running you might want to keep your distance.

Yeah that happened to my gears 1 and 2 and a couple of my madden games.
And in time this will scratch any games because they spin inside so that there read inside. So yeah bruh. They will all get inevitably scratched

If the concle drops while you are playing the game you can get a laser carving in the disc same with the ps3.

I take great care of all my gaming machines (My old fat ps2 is still in mint condition) but my xbox has scratched one of my games, sadly it was my favorite. (Fable), it seems nearly any motion while the xbox is on will mess up a disk.
