Your link did not work,or it didnt work in the UK anyway ? Not all the Red Cross and Red Cressent deal with disasters abroad.Many just stay at home. I understand a lot of their spare time is taken up with training.

They also teach CPR and basic First Aid classes. Plus try to raise $$ for the organization.
Great non-profit to volunteer with, and they have some pretty interesting paid positions as well.

My X was a social worker for them and carried a beeper at night. If there was a fire she would go and get the family into a hotel and make sure they had clothes and such. They do a lot like that all year that is never reported.
